'Glee' Tackles Britney Spears' Snake-Charming VMA Set

Hold tight, Gleeks! The all-Britney Spears episode of "Glee" is just days away, and details about the pop star's tribute are trickling in.
We already know the McKinley high-schoolers are going to revamp Brit's debut smash " ... Baby One More Time" and her Madonna match-up "Me Against the Music." The song-and-dance crew has also reached beyond Spears' trendsetting clips to one of her iconic stage performances: the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards rendition of "I'm a Slave 4 U."
A picture surfaced Friday (September 24) of the megastar's "Glee" namesake Brittany (played by Heather Morris) rocking a bejeweled green-and-blue two-piece similar to Spears' skimpy VMA ensemble, with a yellow boa draped over her shoulders.
Morris recently opened up about the arc of Tuesday's episode, dishing that the glee clubbers rebel against Schuester's ban on retooling Spears' hits.
"Through a special substance, I go under and have a couple of dream sequences — not only myself, but with Santana [Naya Rivera]," Morris told Australian magazine TV Week. "A lot of it has to do with Will [Matthew Morrison] not allowing us to perform Britney Spears songs, because he doesn't agree with what kind of entertainer she is, so it's our fight to do Britney. But it's not just us doing Britney in show choir; there are other sequences — it's our homage to her."
Tuesday's show is shaping up to be a busy one for Morris, who is also vamping it up opposite Spears herself in their reworking of "Music." However, the actress insisted her previous encounters with Spears helped her stay cool around the pop icon.
"It wasn't really nerve-racking, because I've met her before and I wasn't really overwhelmed by who she is," she said. "But the idea of what she has given us for the show and, for me, getting to dance with her and play with her on set, I was just staring at her at one point and thinking, 'This is just so frickin' awesome.' "
Are you excited for the Britney takeover on "Glee" next week? Let us know in the comments!

Stone Temple Pilots Reunited In Hopes Of Opening For Led Zeppelin, Bassist Says

'If time allows, there will definitely be new music,' Robert DeLeo adds of STP's future.By Chris Harris

Stone Temple Pilots' Robert DeLeo and Scott Weiland

There are a number of reasons why Stone Temple Pilots decided to reunite after nearly five years apart — some are obvious, and others, not so much.
Of course, the financial windfall of reviving the grunge stalwarts for an extensive U.S. tour was too good to pass up, and bassist Robert DeLeo readily admits as much. And then there are the fans, the ones who had been with STP since the very beginning as well as those who discovered the band only after it first split back in 2003 and who, woefully, have yet to catch the Pilots live.
On a more personal level, though, Stone Temple Pilots' resurrection was purely selfish, and very much an anticipatory (not to mention optimistic) move on the band's part: If, after the months and months of rumors and denials, there ever is a full-on Led Zeppelin reunion tour, STP wanted to be ready to offer their services as an opening act.
"Believe me, that was one of the reasons," laughed DeLeo. "We thought, 'We should get together now, in case Zeppelin does tour.' I'm serious, man. That would be one hell of a bill: STP and Led Zeppelin. I mean, we could play a doghouse, out in the middle of the ocean, and if I got to play with Zeppelin, that would be a highlight of my life."
Yes, DeLeo — and the rest of the band — had several reservations about raising STP from the dead — a feat DeLeo jokingly referred to as "Mission Impossible." For the band's members, the idea of regrouping was terrifying at first, but with time, the boys settled their differences and tried to think positive.
"For me, it was about putting down some of the things that I was used to getting bitten by," explained the bassist — who, with guitar-playing brother Dean DeLeo, has been collaborating with Peter Frampton on material for his next LP. "After you get bitten, it's hard to go back. I wanted to go into this with an open frame of mind and a positive attitude and just have fun with it. We should have fun with it, which God knows we didn't always have with our career when we were younger. If that's all I can say, and that's what I can get out of this reunion, great.
"I think I speak for all of us when I say there's a lot of unfinished business that we didn't get around to the first go," he continued. "Enough time has gone by, and it feels really good to be back. I don't really want to put too much thought into how it feels — I'm just kind of going with it and keeping a good positive attitude about it. I just needed to get over the things that we all needed to get over, and that's been working so far. If everyone shows up and does this thing, I think it's going to be really amazing."
DeLeo claims that during recent rehearsals, STP were "sounding as good as ever," and he credits sobriety as part of the reason the band's in tip-top shape.
"My brother's going on four years of sobriety," he said. "We have a lot more clarity in the band now, and I think with clarity comes appreciation. I saw that the other night, when we played [a secret gig in Los Angeles]. I saw it in my eyes, and in the eyes of the rest of the band. There's a lot more rock in this band now."
As for an STP record, DeLeo is not 100 percent sure that's going to happen. The goal for STP over the next few weeks, he said, is to reacquaint themselves with their songbook and prepare for their return to the road. Once the band is back in that mindset, the bassist said new STP material is very possible.
"I've always got stuff written, and there's always a long list of songs that are always there — it's a matter of timing," DeLeo said. "If time allows, there will definitely be new music. I think it would be silly not to release new music. I'd like to believe we still have a writing relationship, but the first step is getting reacquainted with what we know."
While STP were on hiatus, frontman Scott Weiland teamed up with Velvet Revolver, and the DeLeo brothers joined forces with Filter's Richard Patrick for Army of Anyone — who are now on hiatus after releasing a poorly received self-titled LP. Does DeLeo foresee an AOA reunion somewhere down the line?
"You never know," he said. "It's just like STP — I didn't know if I was going to return. Whether we get back together and do anything, I think we made a great record, bottom line. That's all that matters to me. If we make another one, I want to make sure it's great, and that applies to STP and anything I do. But I was pretty heartbroken over [the feeble response to AOA's album]."

Swedish House Mafia Movie Director Talks 'Take One'

Christian Larson was at the helm of upcoming documentary about superstar dance music trio, following the global phenoms for a year.By Akshay Bhansali

Last week, MTV News brought you the brand-spankin'-new trailer for "Take One," the highly anticipated documentary about Scandinavian electronic music rock stars Swedish House Mafia. We were lucky enough to catch up with the film's director, Christian Larson, who gave us a behind-the-scenes take on the doc. (Heads up, folks: The noted editor/director's editing prowess is on display in Lady Gaga's "Telephone" video among other clips.)

Signed to EMI earlier this year, Swedish House Mafia will premiere the film in the U.K. on Wednesday, and U.K. fans will be the first to get the documentary on DVD in late November (a U.S. DVD release date remains unconfirmed). SHM's "greatest hits" album Until One doubles as the doc's soundtrack and is due in October.
Larson traveled with SHM — Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Steve Angello — as cameras rolled for virtually an entire year documenting the life of the holy trinity of house.
"We start off in Miami at WMC back in 2009," the director recalled of the trio's stop at that year's Winter Music Conference. "That was a big moment for them. They had just released 'Leave the World Behind,' " Larson said of their hit collaboration with DJ/producer Laidback Luke and singer Deborah Cox. "Then it goes all around the world through festivals in Europe and England, then small pieces from Dubai, Geneva, Brussels, Amsterdam. And then it pretty much ends in Miami again in 2010."
"Take One" marks one of the most ambitious documentary film undertakings with a dance music focus, and it's only fitting that Ingrosso, Axwell, and Angello are each charting superstar DJ/producers on their own. Their decision to join forces and form the Mafia has generated a fervor that has spread to the pop music world. N.E.R.D. frontman Pharrell Williams, for one, contributed bars to the trio's single "One," which charted this year at #1 on Beatport.com. And their latest release, "Miami 2 Ibiza," features a verse from one the U.K.'s hottest MCs, Tinie Tempah.
It's this rapidly swelling stardom that Larson sought to capture in "Take One." He relayed to us his first memory of hanging with the famed trio.
"I was on vacation in France and they had a gig in St. Tropez," Larson said. "And we ended up going to the gig and hanging out with them at the afterparty at 9 in the morning. Sebastian says, 'Why don't we go to lunch at this place?' I said, 'That's three hours away.' And he was like, 'Let's take a f---ing helicopter.' He goes and wakes up Steve and they take me along in a helicopter ride over the French Riviera and we have lunch and then the helicopter picks us up and takes us someplace else, and we end up at their next gig."
Larson added that fans can expect a linear rollout of SHM's eventful year in the film. "It's not narrated at all. It's just sequences of them and it's made into a story. It's all chronological. It's just me following them around and they become characters in their own film. It all happened pretty naturally. It was pretty easy because they are all such strong characters, all three of them."
Swedish House Mafia's album Until One will be available in the U.S. on October 26.

Ke$ha Does Her Own Stunts In VMA Promo

'I thought I was gonna fall on my head, but I didn't,' the singer says.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Ke$ha at her 2010 VMA promo shoot

Photo: Kristian Dowling / PictureGroup

Breakout poptress Ke$ha is up for three MTV Video Music Awards and is slated to present an award when the festivities kick off Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. The "Tik Tok" singer is sure to fit right in amid the typical VMA rowdiness, and even the promo for her appearance is chock-full of high-flying stunts and other craziness.

"The concept ... is I wake up, like a pimp, and I hear some noise, and there's like a wind coming through my boudoir doors, and I run to see what it is, and I just get shoved out by this gust of wind that's supposedly 'fate,' " Ke$ha said, setting up the clip. "Then, I start falling and falling through ... all of my experiences that got me to this point, which is attending the VMAs."
Creating the illusion of a free fall for the spot required Ke$ha to swing about on a harness, an experience that apparently looks way more fun than it feels.
"I did do all my own stunts today, and my vag hurts," Ke$ha griped. "It was kind of scary, because ... I was flying around." Being suspended may have been a bit harsh on her lady bits, but the singer said she's no novice when it comes to hanging around for her videos. "I have used some harnesses before [on] my video for 'Blah Blah Blah.' ... I'm into it."
Ke$ha may have some experience getting strapped into harnesses, but she also admitted that dangling from the contraption was the hardest part of filming. "I think the harness was scarier, only because it was immensely painful as well, and I couldn't touch the ground," she said. "I thought I was gonna fall on my head, but I didn't."
Ultimately, the "Your Love Is My Drug" singer wasn't sweating any of the potential risks of shooting the promo.
"I was only, like, 12 feet high," Ke$ha said. "Worst-case scenario: I just would have, like, broke an arm."
What are you expecting from Ke$ha's appearance at the VMAs? Sound off in the comments below!
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12.

Although the MTV Video Music Awards aren't until Sunday, a slew of VMA-themed concerts featuring Ke$ha, B.o.B and others will take over Los Angeles in the days leading up to the big show.
Sean Kingston kicks things off Thursday night (September 9) with the Verizon Club Night Concert Event at Hollywood's Playhouse, where Jermaine Dupri will also be spinning. On Friday night, Jason Derülo and Never Shout Never will take the Music Box stage at a concert sponsored by Taco Bell and Feed the Beat.
On Saturday night, "Rock Band 3" and FreeCreditScore.com will present the 2010 MTV VMA Concert to Benefit Lifebeat — The Music Industry Fights AIDS, featuring VMA nominees Ke$ha and B.o.B. The "Tik Tok" singer said she is honored to play a show benefiting such an important cause. "It's really awesome that MTV can bring together incredible musicians over VMA weekend, not only to entertain, but to make a difference," she said. "The world of celebrity is a funny game, although it's a great feeling to have the opportunity to use my fame for a good cause helping those in need."
B.o.B is equally excited to perform for a good cause: "The road to the VMAs has been a wild one. I'm glad to be taking time the night before the big show to support a great organization. Lifebeat's message of HIV prevention is an important one for young people, and I am honored to join them in the fight."
Tickets for the Ke$ha and B.o.B event, with all proceeds going to Lifebeat, are available at Lifebeat.org.
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Lindsay Lohan Admits To Failing Drug Test

And THIS is why early discharges from rehab are generally a bad idea {sigh}. Lindsay Lohan confessed on twitter that she had, indeed, failed a drug test.
Regrettably, I did in fact fail my most recent drug test and if I am asked, I am prepared to appear before judge Fox next week as a result.
TMZ is now reporting that Lindsay actually failed two drug tests. In addition to landing her in jail, this setback could also further derail Lindsay's career, according to TMZ.
Lindsay is now relying on Judge Elden Fox to allow her to leave California to shoot "Inferno" in Louisiana and possibly fly to New York City for "Saturday Night Live."
Here's the problem. Sources connected with the case have been telling TMZ ... if Lindsay were to fail a drug test the judge would probably pull the plug on out-of-state-travel -- a privilege for Lindsay, not a right.
...But all bets are off now that Lindsay has flunked two tests.
And sources close to Lindsay somehow already know the big wigs on "Inferno" are pissed that she may have screwed up again, so flying to Louisiana may be a moot question.
You can't really blame the 'Inferno' producers for being upset. It looks like the best thing for Lindsay at this point is a long-term stay in an inpatient facility that focuses solely on drug abuse (not drug problems and psychiatric problems, which is what the UCLA program did).
This is really just TOO sad.

Chris Brown's BET Performance Joins List Of Greatest Pop-Culture Crying Fits

Halle Berry, Kelly Clarkson, Justin Timberlake and more have had their moments.By Kyle Anderson

Chris Brown performs at the 2010 BET awards on Sunday

Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images

Despite the triumphant TV returns of Kanye West, T.I. and El DeBarge at Sunday night's 2010 BET Awards, the big headline from the show was Chris Brown's moving tribute to late superstar Michael Jackson. Brown flawlessly executed all of Jackson's most classic dance moves (including a scorching moonwalk), but when it came time to lend his voice to Jackson's "Man in the Mirror," Brown broke down in tears and could not sing, apparently overwhelmed by the emotion of the situation.

Crying in public is hardly a new phenomenon in the world of popular culture. Brown joins the list of some of the biggest stars in the world who have also broken down on television.
Halle Berry
When Berry won the Oscar for Best Actress at the 74th Annual Academy Awards in 2002 (for her work in "Monster's Ball"), she became the first African-American woman to take home the prize. That, combined with the overwhelming experience that was making the emotionally-charged "Monster's Ball" and the huge standing ovation she received, threw Berry into hysterics during her acceptance speech. "This moment is so much bigger than me," she said.
Kelly Clarkson
When Kelly Clarkson won the very first season of "American Idol," she was initially in a state of shock. Unable to express how she was feeling to the television audience who voted her the victor over Justin Guarini, she moved on to her performance of "A Moment Like This." When she hit the lyric, "I can't believe it's happening to me," she finally broke. She managed to get through the song, but to continuously apologized for her emotion.
Justin Timberlake
Ashton Kutcher's hit MTV show "Punked" certainly pushed a lot of his famous friends to the brink, but few had a reaction like Timberlake. When Kutcher's crew of actors pretended to be federal officers seizing most of his possessions for failure to pay back taxes, Timberlake flipped out and wept. Usually, Kutcher's reveal at the end of the episode throws the celebrity in question into laughing jags or fits of anger, but Timberlake was clearly just filled with relief.
Tonya Harding
Athletes cry all the time, but it's usually because of the overwhelming thrill of victory or the agony of bitter defeat. Rarely do they weep during a particular competition, but that's exactly what Harding did at the 1994 Winter Olympics. After dealing with her connection to the attack on fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan in the run-up to the games, Harding took the ice only to realize that a lace on one of her skates had broken. In between sobs, she pleaded with the judges to allow her to get new laces and start over. They allowed it, though Harding still only finished eighth.
Crystal Bowersox
The season nine "American Idol" runner-up had an extremely emotional run to the finals (including a harrowing health scare), but it took merely the presence of her father and a particularly heartfelt song to push her to tears. Bowersox slipped a handful of sobs into her performance of Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions' "People Get Ready" during Inspirational Week on the show. It was one of the many performances that put Bowersox in the discussion of the best "Idol" contestants of all time.
Tracy Morgan
The always unpredictable star of "Saturday Night Live" and "30 Rock" has had a tough life and a challenging career, but the mere mention of co-star Tina Fey sent Morgan on the crying train when he visited with Oprah Winfrey on an episode of her show back in April. "She's my friend. Tina is my friend. I love her," he told Winfrey as he was fighting back tears.
"Crying Girl"
There are an awful lot of "American Idol" moments on this list, aren't there? Ashley Ferl gained notoriety during the show's sixth season not as a contestant but as a particularly emotional audience member. The 13-year-old Ferl was so taken with "Idol" contestant Sanjaya Malakar's take on the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" that she sobbed uncontrollably, earning herself a great deal of screen time and the privilege of becoming an Internet meme for a while.
Did we miss any? What is the best incident of celebrity crying? And what did you think of Brown's performance? Let us know in the comments!

Ne-Yo Calls Potential Lady Gaga Collabo 'Intriguing'

'Would I jump into her world? Would I pull her into mine?' he says to MTV News.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash

While Lady Gaga has worked with everyone from RedOne and Akon to Teddy Riley and Rodney Jerkins, she sticks to a pretty tight-knit group of collaborators when it comes to her albums, including the forthcoming Born This Way. But that doesn't mean singer/songwriter Ne-Yo hasn't been trying to get in the studio with the "Bad Romance" songstress.

"We've been talking to Gaga's people about some stuff," he said. "Gaga's very difficult to get a hold of as of late, for obvious reasons. She's very busy. We've been talking to her people about doing some stuff."
Ne-Yo is best known for working with artists like Rihanna and Beyoncé and crafting pop-influenced R&B tunes. So how would he apply his hitmaking formula to the dance queen's music? "I have no idea! That's kind of the intriguing thing that I have no idea what that song would sound like," he said. "Like, would I jump into her world? Would I pull her into mine? I don't know, but I feel like it would be interesting to see. Maybe we should get a camera crew over when that happens."
While a Gaga collabo isn't a sure thing, Ne-Yo has confirmed that he's working with Beyoncé on her next album.
"The thing about working with Beyoncé is that she definitely has her own agenda," the "Irreplaceable" songwriter said. "She's an artist that knows exactly what she wants to do.
"She's going to give you directions [like] 'Here's where I'm going, so here's where I need you to be,' " Ne-Yo explained. "And, you know, I'm a person that follows direction well. [And she'll be like], 'So this is the sound, this is the vibe; make it happen.' And I write and she likes it or she doesn't. And in this case she did, and there you have it."

'Social Network' Star Jesse Eisenberg Defends Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg

'He prioritizes Facebook over his personal relationships. This is not something that I think is bad,' Eisenberg says.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf

Jesse Eisenberg

Mark Zuckerberg made a lot of friends through Facebook, but he lost a lot too. And when moviegoers head to theaters this weekend to see "The Social Network," David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin's take on the building of the Facebook empire and the man that launched it, they will certainly be left wondering if Zuckerberg is really a bad guy.

The film, based on the book "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, focuses on the early years of Facebook and Zuckerberg's undeniable ambition. And if you ask Jesse Eisenberg, who plays Zuckerberg in the film, he's really not as bad as he may come off.
"When you spend six months, 14 hours a day doing the same thing, playing the same role, it's impossible to think of that role in the same way the audience might think of that role or the way the other characters might think of that character," he told MTV News at the film's junket in New York City last weekend. "You know, in the same way we can't think of ourselves in kind of an objective way, that's how actors have to think about the roles that they play.
"I didn't think it was that difficult with this one though because he does things that are occasionally hurtful to other characters, but I think it's always coming from a real place. He prioritizes Facebook over his personal relationships. This is not something that I think is bad. His interest is elsewhere, so he severs these personal relationships he has in the movie in order to take Facebook in the direction that it needs to go. I think it's a completely defendable position."

Justin Bieber Gets 'Kudos' For His 'CSI' Cameo

Show's exec producer sings the star's praises over his appearance on the show, airing Thursday.By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber on "CSI"

Photo: CBS

Justin Bieber might be one of a handful of pop stars to make a cameo on "CSI," but he has certainly left his mark on the cast and the crew of the hit CBS crime drama. When Bieber hits the small screen Thursday night (September 23) for his performance as Jason McCann, he will certainly leave fans stunned by his acting chops, one of the show's producers told MTV News.

"I thought that he did a really good job. We only had Justin for a day, for 10 and a half hours, and he had a lot of work crammed into those 10 and a half hours," executive producer Carol Mendelsohn said about the first of Bieber's two appearances on the show. "And he had one super big scene, and the scene was an interrogation scene in the police department with [actor] George Eads, and George actually took Justin under his wing."
Why did the veteran "CSI" actor feel that Biebs was worthy of his mentorship? "George said that when he was just starting out, Tom Selleck took him under his wing, so I think he tried to return that kindness, and he really had some time to work the material," she explained. "We built in some time, and I thought that scene was really good, and Justin had a couple of scenes where he didn't have a lot of dialogue or no dialogue and then two pretty heavy scenes."
Noting that Bieber did a "really good job" with the heavier work, Mendelsohn added that Bieber has some acting chops. "It's hard for any accomplished, mature actor to come on the set and fall right into character and do your work, so kudos to Justin," she said.

Ke$ha is, without question, one of the biggest breakout stars of 2010. A slurring, whirling, hard-partying pop oddity (who may also be a genius) with a #1 album and a boatload of hit singles to her name, not to mention more than a few enemies. She even has under her star-spangled belt, her very own, very public WTF debacle in the form of a rather, uh, divisive "Saturday Night Live" performance.

¿Y a ti? ¿Qué te parece todo esto?

Drake Reveals He's Working With Rihanna On Loud

'I just did this great song with Rihanna,' rapper tells MTV News.By Jayson Rodriguez

Drake

Before Drake's brief Twitter affair with Nicki Minaj, the Toronto lyricist had a celebrity romance with Rihanna, whose last project he did unreleased work on and whom he was spotted smooching in a New York bowling alley.

The rapper recalled the incident on his debut, Thank Me Later, spitting about their dalliance and later saying he was Rihanna's "pawn" in an interview.
Now the fire appears to be doused, as the two are reuniting for Rihanna's forthcoming project, Loud, according to Drake.
"I just did this great song," he told MTV News. "I don't know if I'm supposed to talk about it. I just did this great song with Rihanna; hopefully we can do a video for it. I'm really excited about that."
The two had a fling before Rihanna became involved with Los Angeles Dodgers player Matt Kemp. Drake denied his involvement with the singer many times, but he finally let loose on his song "Fireworks."
"I was a pawn," Drake told the New York Times earlier this year about his time with RiRi, which began with an invitation to pen a track for the singer. "You know what she was doing to me? She was doing exactly what I've done to so many women throughout my life, which is show them quality time, then disappear. I was like, 'Wow, this feels terrible.' "
Are you excited to hear Drake and Rihanna's collabo? Let us know in the comments!

Lady Gaga Speaks Out Against 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' In Maine

'There are amazing heroes here today whose stories are more powerful than any story I could tell,' she tells 4,500-person crowd.By James Montgomery

Lady Gaga speaks out against "don't ask, don't tell" in Maine on Monday

Photo: Matt Harper/ MTV News

PORTLAND, Maine — It was probably the smallest stage Lady Gaga has set foot on since her East Village days, but it might have also been the most important.

Because Monday (September 20), on that stage — a simple wooden thing with a brick backdrop — in Portland's Deering Oaks Park, she spoke loudly, proudly and passionately against "don't ask, don't tell," the long-standing policy that prevents openly gay men and women from serving in the Armed Forces and a policy that, on Tuesday, may very well be ancient history if the Senate approves the National Defense Authorization Act.
Clearly, the stakes are high, and Gaga, ever the entertainer, was more than up to the task. Speaking before an audience of some 4,500 (mostly students from nearby colleges, activists and a few somewhat confused passersby) on behalf of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, she unveiled a speech titled "The Prime Rib of America" that took members of the Senate to task, urged her supporters to action and even managed to tie in rather nicely to the much-discussed "meat dress" she wore to last weekend's MTV Video Music Awards.
"My name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. I am an American citizen ... [and] to the Senate, to Americans, to Senator Olympia Snowe, Senator Susan Collins — both from Maine — and Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts: Equality is the prime rib of America," she said. "Equality is the prime rib of what we stand for as a nation. And I don't get to enjoy the greatest cut of meat that my country has to offer. Are you listening? Shouldn't everyone deserve the right to wear the same meat dress that I did? Repeal 'don't ask, don't tell.'
"I'm here today in this park, in Maine, to say that, if the Senate and the president are not going to repeal this 'don't ask, don't tell' policy, perhaps they should be more clear with us about who the military is fighting for, who our tax dollars are supporting and, ultimately, how much does the prime rib cost?" she continued. "Because I thought this was an 'all you can eat' buffet. This equality stuff, I thought equality meant everyone. But apparently, for certain value meals, for certain civil rights, I have to pay extra, because I'm gay. ... When it's time to order my meal, when it's time to benefit from the freedoms of the Constitution that I protect and fight for, I have to pay extra. I shouldn't have to pay extra. I should have the ability, the opportunity, the right to enjoy the same rights — the same piece of meat — that my fellow soldiers, fellow straight soldiers, already have included in their Meal of Rights. It's prime rib, it's the same size, it's the same grade, the same cost, at wholesale cost, and it's in the Constitution."
But Gaga's entire speech wasn't one long meat analogy. At one point, she drew whoops of support from the crowd by suggesting that several senators — including Arizona Republican John McCain, who plans to lead a filibuster against Tuesday's vote — were "using homophobia as a defense in their argument" and said that, rather than continue to support "don't ask, don't tell," perhaps those same senators would rather support her proposed piece of legislation.
"Doesn't it seem to be that 'don't ask, don't tell' is backwards? Doesn't it seem to you that we should send home the prejudiced? The straight soldier who hates the gay soldier? The straight soldier who has prejudice in his heart in the space where the military asks him to hold our core American values?" she asked. "I am here today because I would like to propose a new law; a law that sends home the soldier that has the problem. Our new law is called 'if you don't like it, go home.' If you are not committed to perform with excellence as a United States soldier because you don't believe in full equality, go home. If you are not honorable enough to fight without prejudice, go home. If you are not capable of keeping your oath to the Armed Forces to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic ... then go home."
Earlier in the afternoon, members of the SLDN — including discharged servicemen Mike Almy and David Hall, both of whom accompanied Gaga to the VMAs — told the crowd their personal stories of unjust prosecution at the hands of "don't ask." Portland Mayor Nick Mavodones, who had worked directly with the organization to bring the event to his city, also expressed his distaste for the policy. But the majority of the crowd was here to see Gaga, and she delivered. There were no flashy costumes (she wore a sportcoat, power tie and glasses) or over-the-top showpieces, just one of the biggest pop stars on the planet speaking out against what she considers to be an unjust law — and, hopefully, helping to get it overturned.
"There are amazing heroes here today whose stories are more powerful than any story I could tell, any fight I've ever fought, and any song that I could tell," Gaga said. "I'm here because they inspire me. I'm here because I believe in them. I'm here because 'don't ask, don't tell' is wrong ... it's unjust and, fundamentally, it is against all that we stand for as Americans."

Guillermo Del Toro Addresses Tom Cruise Casting Rumors

Director of 'At the Mountains of Madness' adaptation tells MTV News he can't reveal too much, adding, 'I have my eye on other actors.'By Eric Ditzian

Guillermo del Toro

Photo: MTV News

"Who is Bilbo?"
That was the question we put to Guillermo del Toro again and again for easily two years, harassing the director for the identity of the actor to be cast as the star of "The Hobbit."
Del Toro left that film in May, but casting questions have only followed him to his latest project, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness." Rumors circulated earlier this month that del Toro and Universal are eyeing Tom Cruise or James McAvoy to star in the film.

When the director stopped by the MTV Newsroom last week, we asked him to address the talk, and had barely uttered Cruise's name before del Toro jumped in. "And James McAvoy," he said. "And next week it's going to be somebody else. I've gone through this in 'The Hobbit' week by week, where they would say David Tennant, Tobey Maguire. I truly don't want to go through it again with 'Mountains.' We haven't cast yet."
He did, however, mention a role he's written specifically for Ron Perlman, with whom he's collaborated on two "Hellboy" movies. But when it came to Cruise and McAvoy, all del Toro would say is "there is nothing tangible" with regard to casting. And as reluctant as he is to go through intense casting speculation again, the Mexican-born director realizes it comes with the territory.
"It's part of making movies that have a blissful, high visibility," he conceded. "Everyone has their own interpretation of Lovecraft, especially because of the ambiguity of his descriptions. You know you're going to disappoint some portion of the fans. You can only bet on your own instincts. For everyone that was supporting Martin Freeman [for Bilbo], there were people supporting James McAvoy or somebody else.
"I have my eye on other actors, some of them very unexpected," he added about "Mountains." "I think people will be surprised by every piece of casting in the movie. We will do unexpected stuff. If I was a fan, I would be speculating. In this movie, I'm a fan who unfortunately knows all the information."
Who would you like to see the "Mountains" role go to? McAvoy or Cruise? Let us know in the comments!

Britney Spears' Ex-Bodyguard Defends Lawsuit

Fernando Flores tells TMZ he's 'standing up for what I believe is right.'By Kelley L. Carter

A former bodyguard for pop superstar Britney Spears defended his sexual-harassment lawsuit Thursday (September 9), saying he's "standing up for what I believe is right."
Fernando Flores, the bodyguard who alleged earlier this week that the pop singer repeatedly made unwanted sexual advances toward him and exposed her naked or near-naked body to him, gave a quick interview to TMZ outside his lawyer's Orange County office.
Spears, however, denied the allegations, posting a statement on her website saying that she and her attorneys believed the suit would be dismissed. "This lawsuit is another unfortunate situation where someone is trying to take advantage of the Spears family and make a name for himself," the statement read.
To Spears' statement, Flores told the gossip website "if that's what they think, then that's what they think."
A dollar amount isn't cited in the suit -- which is posted on TMZ -- but Flores is seeking damages based on the sexual-harassment incidents and for "intentional infliction of emotional distress." Flores also alleged in the suit that Spears abused her children. In the suit, he said the 28-year-old had sex and engaged in violent arguments in front of her two young sons.
Sources told TMZ that Flores' accusations of child abuse (including an incident where he says Spears allegedly whipped one of her sons with a belt) were declared without merit by the Department of Children and Family Services.

Lady Gaga 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Speech 'Resonated' With Maine Crowd

'She wasn't paid to come here and speak; she did it because she felt like she needed to,' one supporter tells MTV News at rally.By James Montgomery

Lady Gaga

Photo: Cliff Kucine/ Getty Images

PORTLAND, Maine — On Monday, thousands packed into Deering Oaks Park to witness Lady Gaga's rather spur-of-the-moment speech in support of the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell." Many of them were students at the nearby University of Southern Maine, active in the school's Center for Sexualities and Gender Diversity, and they were understandably amazed that one of the biggest pop stars on the planet had come to their town to speak on their behalf.

But, as MTV News learned in speaking with some of them, the event had a much deeper meaning too. As it turns out, many of them also had a personal stake in the ongoing debate over "don't ask" — which failed to get enough Senate votes on Tuesday (September 21) to spur a formal debate — and to have Gaga in their corner meant more than they could express.
"Her speech really resonated with me because, actually, this summer, I thought about joining the military, but because I'm gay, I can't," USM student Kelly Golek said. "If it's repealed, there's a very good chance I will [enlist]. So I thought this whole event was amazing, because you really don't see something like this. Like, what other pop star would come out and do this? She's very brave, and I was totally moved by that speech."
"It really resonated with me, because I've actually been considering the military, because I took my ASVAB [military aptitude exam], and I got an incredibly high score, so I could basically do anything I wanted to in the Navy," Ellen McDonald said. "But because I'm a lesbian, I'm not able to do that at the moment. So, [her speech] really touched me, because those are my hopes and dreams."
And even those who weren't prohibited from serving openly still felt a personal connection to Gaga's speech, because, the way they see it, she's lending her voice to the voiceless.
"She wasn't paid to come here and speak; she did it because she felt like she needed to. [She said] 'I'm coming to Maine ... be there,' " Chris Johnson said. "It makes you feel like you have a voice, because she takes the issue and says, 'I will be your voice, because I know you're not being heard right now.' She's the voice of this generation that's not old enough to vote, but we have different points of view from the generation that raised us."
"There are celebrities that do things to help humanity, but Lady Gaga really does things," USM student Marepheen Berry said. "She has a way of putting forth her messages. She shocks people, and that's what I like about her: She shocks people, and it really opens up their eyes and turns heads."
Of course, there were also those in the crowd who, while active in the fight to repeal "don't ask," were mainly there to see Lady Gaga. And, really, can you blame them?
"I think it's unbelievable. I was in shock when we first heard. I don't even know how to describe it," USM freshman Joseph Sibley laughed. "When we found out, I was like, 'There's no way, nobody ever comes to Maine, and nobody ever talks to us.' ... And I'm glad I came. It was awesome."

Lady Gaga's Born This Way Is Her 'Freedom Album,' Producer Says

RedOne says the upcoming Born This Way is 'too good to talk about.'By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga

Photo: Getty Images

Why will Lady Gaga's forthcoming Born This Way album "piss people off"?

Gaga's main man, producer and songwriter RedOne, thinks it might be because the album is all about the artist's liberation.
"I think it's more of her freedom album. It's like freedom this album ... it's her album!" he told MTV News.
But trying to squeeze any more details out of the "Bad Romance" producer proved difficult. He remained tight-lipped about details, mostly because he feels the album, which Gaga has noted will veer toward bitter and political, isn't ready for everyday talk just yet.
"To be honest with you, I think that this album that she's making is too precious to talk about. When it comes out you'll hear and you'll make your choice," he said. "I think you're gonna love it. But I think it's too precious for me to talk about it. It's crazy."
RedOne said that as far as he knows there will be no Beyoncé-type collaborations on Born This Way. But he reiterated that he's always stepping up his game with each album.
"I said with everything I do I want to shock people. Honestly, it's like whatever I do, I always want to shock people sonically, lyrically with the writer, anything that's gonna get the reaction," he said. "And so when it comes to her album, I mean honestly, I really think it's too precious, it's too good to talk about. I don't want to talk about it at all. I just want to save it. I'll let her talk about it. It's her. It's her presenting Gaga. I'm the producer, but she's the artist.
"Whatever happens later is going to happen," he said about which of his tracks might make the final cut. "I can't say I'm doing this or I'm doing that. It's a surprise. I want to leave it like that."

Usher Dazzles On The VMA Stage With 'DJ' And 'OMG'

Ush combined his legendary dance skills with spectacular special effects.By Rochell D. Thomas

Usher performs at the 2010 VMAs

Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage

Call it what you will: talent, swag, skills. But one thing's true about Usher Terry Raymond IV: When he steps on the dance floor, some mysterious thing comes out of him and puts the G in groove. After he was tapped to perform at the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, executive producer Dave Sirulnick challenged Usher to "show why you're king," and the 31-year-old Grammy winner didn't disappoint.
As predicted by the lucky few who got a peek at Thursday's practice performance for his hit "OMG," Ush pulled off moves that would make the late great Michael Jackson jealous in a mammoth stage production that included more special-effects bells and whistles than a summer blockbuster.

Usher opened the performance with "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love," perched two flights above the stage on a ledge surrounded by blinding green laser lights. Then he slid, with the help of barely visible wires and mounts, down a flight, all the while popping and locking. When the father of two finally ticked his way down to stage level, he was surrounded by an army of dancers also clad in black suits with white stripes designed to toss and catch special effect lights.
Directed by Anthony Mandler, Usher's "OMG" clip earned Best Male Video, Best Dance Music Video and Best Choreography Moonman nominations. During the pre-show, Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" beat it in the Best Dance category, where Raymond was, for many, the lead contender.
If Usher was disappointed, he didn't let it show. When he launched the "OMG" portion of his performance, the stage seemed to disappear, as red laser lights moved forward in blinding configurations spelling out O.M.G. and Usher's name. More dancers lowered from the ceiling on Cirque du Soleil-esque contraptions, dipping in and out of the red beams. Such a 3-D light display could probably have been seen from the moon, if it weren't for the roof of the Nokia Theatre.
Usher ended his set standing, head back, with his arms outstretched in the Jesus pose. He didn't say a word. Didn't need to.
The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there's plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.

Usher's VMA-Nominated 'OMG' Inspired By '80s Sci-Fi Character

Director Anthony Mandler wanted to let R&B superstar take viewers 'on a journey, not a ride.'By Jayson Rodriguez

Usher in "OMG"

For a video as forward-thinking as Usher's "OMG" -- with its laser beams and light flashes -- director Anthony Mandler actually looked back for inspiration.
"The original idea was kind of Max Headroom," Mandler told MTV News, citing the animated science-fiction character from '80s British TV. "That's where it came from — the TV flickering on and there's this character. We just wanted to bring it up to date."

"Max Headroom was always in his room," he continued, "this unidentifiable room, '80s shapes. I used that for inspiration."
The formula worked: "OMG" is among the Best Male Video nominees for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The clip is up against Drake's "Find Your Love," Jason Derülo's "In My Head," Eminem's "Not Afraid" and B.o.B's "Airplanes." Mandler is a multiple nominee, having also helmed Drake's video.
"OMG" is the first time Usher and Mandler — who has worked with Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige and Rihanna — collaborated on a project.
Usher said he knew the video would be a challenge and wanted to make sure the director was up to the task.
"When I first shot the song to him, I was like, 'Are you sure you're gonna be able to catch this one?' And he said, 'I got it,' " Usher explained.
"We wanted to bring Will.I.Am (the song's producer) into my world," he continued. "Obviously, the international sound and look and feel has already been set, but we wanted to do something theatrical, fun and energetic to show us working off of each other and playing off of each other as artists, but the cinematography would be artistic and incredible."
Mandler described the visuals as "Hitchcock-ian." Though the style of the shot was important to the director, he had a simpler goal in mind: to capture Usher in his element. He said the key to the clip was simply letting Usher's talent take over.
"The concept was to create a world where we put Usher in a space where he does what I think he does better than anyone else in the world, which is perform at a level and magnitude of a superstar and take us, the viewer, whether audible or visually, on a journey, not a ride," the director said. "And, in that, I wanted to create an unpredictability, so one set leads to another and another, and you never know what's gonna happen. Along the way, Usher becomes our guide. We're so focused on him, we don't notice the change. The thing is unfolding little by little, and you can't quite see far enough ahead to know what's gonna come next."
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through September 12.

Kanye West Reveals Jay-Z Joint Album Details

MC tweets Pete Rock, Q-Tip and Madlib have contributed to the project.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Kanye West's forthcoming joint release with Jay-Z won't just feature the two hip-hop heavyweights trading bars. The album is shaping up to be collaborative effort that ropes in a slew of rap voices from underground icons to chart-topping kingpins.
West took to his Twitter account on Saturday (September 25) to reveal that beatmaster Pete Rock and A Tribe Called Quest frontman Q-Tip have jumped on the project. "We got new Pete Rock Joints on the Watch the Thrown album... Q Tip joints..." West tweeted. He added that the album is also set to include a musical offering from prolific, crate-digging luminary Madlib. "We bout to spit on this Madlib beat."
The Jigga/'Ye album is part of the hip-hop superstar's newly launched campaign to get fresh music to the fans. After announcing in August that he plans to release a spankin' new track every Friday until Christmas, West tweeted on the first day of his G.O.O.D. Friday initiative that he's hooking up with Hov for a five-track album. The Jay-Z/Nicki Minaj/Rick Ross/Bon Iver collabo "Monster" is slated to appear on the record.
The Jay-Z joint album details also come a day after Yeezy unleashed another Hov-assisted cut, "So Appalled." West dished that the newly released G.O.O.D. Friday track, which also features Pusha T, Swizz Beatz, Cyhi the Prynce and RZA, is the weekly joint he's feeling the most.
"Ok So Appalled might be my personal favorite Good Friday song so far... It's just my favorite style of hip hop done very modern," West tweeted of the string-laden track, which includes the various MCs hollers of "f---in' ridiculous ridiculous." "Just Swizz's voice over the cello's is haunting," adding that he may revisit the track and "do another version where I bring that part in right after Pusha's verse also."
